This about a year or so too late for my gang, although I still cut up their apples after school because they prefer it that way and also because they do get wiggly teeth that make it hard to bite into apples.
But I cannot be alone when I say; I have no idea how many apples I have cut up and continue to cut up, for children, in my lifetime! They’ve come around to eating the peel *yes*. I used to have to core, peel and slice 10 apples, easily a day for my family!
The Daily Apple Dilemma
BUSY PARENT PROBLEM: You are not alone when you say you have cut up thousands of apples in your life! Slicing apples is a classic daily task, but when you’re a busy parent, those few minutes spent coring, peeling, and slicing for the lunch box feel like a major hassle. It’s a healthy fruit—it should be easy!
And the worst part? Despite all that effort (and yes, the squirt of lemon juice!), those carefully packed slices come home uneaten. Why? Because they’ve turned… BROWN! (Kids say: Ewwwww!)
The Brilliant Trick: No More Brown Apples
This simple hack is brilliant because it addresses the core issue: keeping the apple intact until lunch time. Here’s what you do:
Slice the apple into sections, but keep the core intact—do not slice all the way through the bottom.
Sprinkle the exposed flesh side of the apple with a little lemon juice (or whatever acidic taste your kids prefer).
Reassemble the apple! Put the slices back into the apple shape
[DISCLAIMER: Please advise your children NOT to shoot the rubber bands at their classmates or, you know, co-workers. 😉]
Place the apple in a plastic baggie or a reusable container, whichever method you prefer, est Voila!
You’re welcome.
